To follow up on my negligence to not posting blogs or podcasts, I changed my strategy on hiring by going a different route. A good friend of mine, Jonathan, a Union contractor, mentioned that I needed to log everything. He realized that even though I was self-employed for over 10 years, my failure to log information could hurt me in the future. We sat down in early September 2019, and told me the importance of logging everything that happens each day in a legal binding book. He even told me to log my own hours. He showed me some of his logs and the importance of logging minute, and critical data. He asked me how did I know how much I was making when I never track my hours or expenses. None of the business friends that “showed me the ropes” mentioned logging data, and I never seen them do it. I decided to take Jonathan’s advice. On the 3rd Chick Fil A, I started to log everything. Multiple trades were falling behind and the Super on the job would request me to relocate to different areas, bouncing me around. I logged it all. I logged when someone didn’t come in that would affect my job. I logged that the electrical boxes weren’t complete, so I couldn’t cover the walls. This gave me leverage to request overtime and proof that I was not causing delays. Having the proper information to prove that I did not hold back any trade willingly, saved me thousands of dollars, and bumped up my revenue. This was testament of the importance of logging and I happened to see its power firsthand on the commercial job. Jonathan was like a business coach, giving pointers he learned to save his crews from litigation and backlash. He expressed that if I am serious about growing, I need to start to log everything as clearly evident from the commercial job. Jonathan is a solid friend. On his down time, he would go on YouTube to find if there were contractors that were where I was looking to be. He told me that he found a software program called

The first new job of 2020 was a large 8-bedroom rental of over 3600 square feet. The job included about 400 linear feet of wainscoting, wrapping 3 large collar ties, install 20 solid pre-hung doors, picture frame about 20 windows as well as picture frame 10 high complex angle windows, install 2 railing systems, install base molding, put up pine tongue and groove ceilings in a game room as well as tongue and groove over the stairs going from the lowest level to the main level, and put in shelves in all the closets. According to my logging, I took 249 pictures, been on the job 25 days, with a total of 183 hours, and I gave the builder access to it. That data is accurate and I can access it anytime. Even though Jonathan and I were really good friends, we spent more time on the phone in the last few months than we ever have. He mentioned that another friend of ours was looking for work and suggested that I reach out to him. I took his advice, and Edgar wanted to help me out as an office helper. He already had a lot of experience with customer service and felt a change of industry may help. He was familiar with CRM (customer relation management) software and enjoyed to talk to customers. His job was to collaborate with me on proposals, do follow ups, and to help me with the things that an office person can handle, so I can focus on getting the physical work completed. The first job that we had was an insurance claim job for another friend of ours, Joe. This would put the trust to the test on how well we can work with one another and how friends will treat us, since there is always that kind of dynamic that could hurt friendships. I have heard from almost everyone that you should never mix friendship or family with business, but I didn’t agree, I always felt that if you do the right job and treat your friends and family like customers, everything would be just fine. I can proudly say that I never lost a friendship from any work that I have ever done and this was no exception. Edgar and I, completed Joe’s job as one of the first jobs during the official pandemic shutdown and Joe was extremely impressed on how well we all worked together.

With such uncertainty in the economy, we were planning on how we can stay relevant in the crisis, and we had to, we needed to make this work. Edgar gave me just a few hours a week, and those hours were powerful to streamline customer expectations and he officially came on the team in September. His self-given title, Director of Operations, gave him a sense of purpose and empowerment. It was in September that I figured that I can start to blog again, especially if we are going to focus more on revenue coming from our own customers, and not as a subcontractor.

In 2020, I have completed another 15 books and used the information to hone my personal life as well as business. Edgar and I have done about 18 jobs together in 2020, and his focus on customers frees me up to do blogs. My website will be updated soon, and 2021 will be an amazing year! We are looking forward to provide value to homeowners and contractors.

Throughout 2020, I have not stressed like I have done in the past. I truly did learn how to control my thoughts to have better peace of mind. Throughout the year, I wore a mask in every home to give homeowners peace of mind. In May, my little brother, Carmine, passed away in the hospital when family was restricted to see patients. The nurse there was able to FaceTime my mother and I to try to give him hope. Although unorthodox and painfully sad, I was able to control my stress. In August a vendor promised material delivery multiple times in which we relayed the message to the homeowner, making them very frustrated to know that it kept getting pushed back. We took extreme ownership on the delay and offered a nice discount, even though the vendor would not offer any due to their error. I believe that since Preferred Carpentry was hired, it is our responsibility to make it right. In November, Edgar got covid, and I told him to not worry, to rest and he will still get his pay. In December, a customer gave me covid, putting me out of work for 3 full weeks. Despite the setbacks, instead of stressing out, Edgar and I decided to be more efficient in the tasks we are already doing. Handwritten cards go out once a week to specific customers, trades, or vendors. We decided to have 2 or more vendors or subs in each profession to limit any setbacks. We no longer give specific dates; we give a range of time. We log all activities and as of January 2021, we are now measuring leads, signed contracts, and honing in how proficient we are on each job to make sure no more jobs put us in the red. Now that I can see that Edgar truly does care for the success of the business, it frees up time to provide value through blogs, podcasts, and other media. I also thank everyone that has reached out to me with words of encouragement.

Blogs are powerful and this story will share why. My last published blog was September 3rd, 2018 followed by the last podcast on September 24, 2018! I intended to stay consistent and didn’t want to be another statistic of someone who will not stay active at it. And look at that! I became a statistic. Sure, I stopped, however, I can pick it back up… even if it is over 2 years later. If you’re someone that’s thinking about writing a blog, providing content, or creating a podcast, I think you should do it. People from over the world still email me, and I only did 3 blogs, and 7 podcasts! I think that is pretty cool!

What happened? My workload and a change in employee status required my undivided attention. To give a quick recap, in August 2018, Preferred Carpentry was selected to be the finish carpenter for a brand-new Chick Fil A. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, since my businesses inception in 2006, and as a word of mouth contractor with 2 new workers.

and later that month, I had to let one guy go. With one guy left, the workload became heavier, and despite the hectic schedule, I had to let the other one go in early December. Think about how hard of a decision that was. Two major contracts, and the constant coming in late or not showing up was sabotaging the scheduling. The only thing I could predict was it was going to happen again, just not when. I hired a friend of my fiancé, and increased my work hours from 10-hour days to 20-hour days to cover loss of time, to satisfy my obligations to not cause any delays. Despite the challenge and family hardly seeing me, I managed to finish on time in early December.

I believe the consistency of the podcasts and blogs, helped me get noticed by the general contractor who was building Chick Fil A’s. Yes, me as a small-time contractor only known by my community, received a call in August, to provide a bid for the successful fast-food chain. To me, that meant a lot. I wound up winning the bid while working on

, tentatively beginning October 2018. I was confident on getting everything done because I had a team. With it just being me, not getting sued was my priority. So, the podcasts and blogs had to wait. The Chick Fil A had some setbacks and that was a blessing for me, as the ready date changed to late December, after Cake and Corolla was completed. Talk about a weight off my shoulders!

Regarding the Chick Fil A project, I called in favors and a good friend Matt, my contracting buddy Johnny and his crew, helped and it went well besides my stress levels, and I developed anxiety. I had a lot of sleepless nights trying to figure out how to completing my obligations on time, and in April 2019, I have satisfied my contract, with no delays. The GC was impressed and offered an opportunity for another one. When April 2019 was over and I reflected, I have seen first hand other trades falling behind and nothing bad happened to them. I caused myself stress that I never experienced in my life, and realized titan companies do have understanding leaders.

I decided a different approach on growing my business. I started to listen to audiobooks to help me become a better businessman. I knew first hand on what to expect, and from May to June, I completed another Chick Fil A and finished 3 audiobooks in that time. The final CFA for the year started in late September, and was completed in December 2019. Yes, I wound up working and completing 3 of them. The books along with first hand experience helped me view things differently, and as of this writing in January 2021, I no longer stress and that is power! The best decision I made in April 2019 was to read books to help me as a person in my business, and personal life. I have read 11 powerful books in that year, and I will share those books with you if you want. Now, I know I focused on 4 commercial jobs and up until December 2019. As a residential contractor, I never thought I would have an opportunity especially since my advertising budget was about $400 a year, (HomeAdvisor). What I didn’t share were the word of mouth jobs. The whole year of 2019 was extremely busy. The focus of this article is to reintroduce myself from my abrupt stop on creating content, and to note the power of them, as 3 CFA’s came from blogs and podcasts. Did the GC read or listen to them? I would say most likely not, however, it was the content that helped with SEO’s (Search Engine Optimization), to get me ranked better. If you are like me, unfamiliar with SEO’s, consider my experience as a means to get your business more exposure.

Does your contractor treat you the same, feel or think the same? When someone works on your house, do they do so with pride, or are they there just to make a quick buck? Will they do the extras that are necessary for a quality outcome, or will they do whatever to get out as fast as possible? I have seen pictures where so called tilers put tile in a shower right on drywall, and they probably used mastic too! I read a comment from that installer that wrote, "lol, Don't need it when your professional". I cringed 2 times! Once when he wrote professional, and I am sure you can guess the other.

I believe it is important for you to do some extra research on who does work for you. I know we (contractors) all start somewhere, but that doesn't excuse poor workmanship. There are so many imposters out there and you have really no way of knowing. The best things you can do is ask questions to answers you already know, and see progress pics of work. These imposters are hurting the industry and your trust in us. I personally think that you should hire someone with a credible background.

A buddy of mine sent me a video on Instagram showing me a laminate job being done by a "contractor" and right away I saw a few problems. For one thing, the laminate had the seams of where each new piece meets with the other at least 2 to 4 inches away from the one above or below it. Not only that, but the contractor finished about 6 feet worth (about 22 rows) and the seams were not even in uniform. The whole floor had no flow to it. I am willing to bet that you would want a nice aesthetic look to your project. Honestly, that was the main concern to my friend. Even though theres no rule about that, the contractor did break some rules, and that was, seams must be at least 6-8 inches apart. Another concern was that with this type of floor, you need to complete the row above before you complete the row below it. This guy left out the pieces by a door way. With this system, it would be impossible to put in the missing pieces without damaging the laminate. All flooring installers know this, but clearly, this contractor didn't. Do you want to know what the craziest thing is? This contractor charged $4 a square foot to put in this laminate floor!  That is a premium price, and at that price, they better do the best job ever or buyers remorse kicks in.

I guess I am getting tired of seeing people claim to be a handyman, or a contractor of some type, and cannot do a proper job. It actually blows my mind, especially when the product comes with instructions. That is the absolute astonishing thing. How can anyone provide a warranty or quality when they don't follow the manufacturers recommendations? (Oh, that's right, they don't, but we do!)

I believe it is easy to get into construction. No diploma is needed, or a license required for some contractors. I actually thought it would be hard to make a name in the industry. As I get older, I have been in thousands of homes, and I have seen beautiful work, but mostly, awful work. I mean, how hard is it really to follow instructions? I believe some things are skill over instruction, such as spackling, faux painting, finding a proper layout in a complex room. But so many contractors do things so wrong, and we don't understand it. We think it's so easy to do what we do because we follow recommendations. We do not put cardboard under tile to "shim it up". We do not install hardwood flooring without proper expansion spacing, or until the company says its ready to install (wood needs to acclimate to the room/home). We use levels to install pocket doors so the door has a parallel line to the trim and jamb that's put up plumb.

I am not going to lie, I really thought that everyone does it the way we do it. I thought all contractors go into a persons home wearing foot coverings. I thought that everyone installs tile that is meant for the walls on the walls, and not the floor. I was so sure that contractors install kitchen cabinets with hidden screws behind the doors, and, I thought that all contractors glue their miters to all wood.

I hope that you find someone you truly can trust to give you your money's worth. There is an expression in my industry, "if you think it's expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur". Just because they are competitive in their price doesn't mean that they are no good, and just because they are expensive doesn't make them great. I personally don't like the expression "you get what you pay for", I think if you don't do the proper research, you may get taken advantage of. I only listed 2 separate instances of 2 different homeowners getting taken advantage of.

. They made a decision to take on your project for less than the original price. There is no standard. We charge what we think we deserve, as you pay what you think it is worth. It is a hard trusting relationship, but when you find a contractor that takes care of your home, you should realize how lucky you are.

I hope that when you are ready for a person to work on your home, that you learn as much as you can about that person. Too many friendships have been broken because a friend said they knew what they were doing, and the job was done wrong. Don't hire someone because you feel like you have to. Never do that! Make sure you are confident with your decision, because you work hard for your money and your home deserves to be treated with respect. Don't let just anyone knock out walls because they think its not load bearing. Don't let anyone tile your bathroom unless they truly understand water penetration and how to properly seal up the perimeter. Don't let anyone on your roof without understanding how to properly install it. Trust your gut.

As this is my first podcast, I wanted to offer you podcasts once a week that will range between 10-30 minutes long, and the more I become comfortable with this, I’m sure it will get better with material, and to do that, I would love your feedback. The content is going to be 100% real, raw, authentic, and based off of your feedback. I hope to entertain you with information that will range from how I got started doing carpentry and construction, to why I chose to start a podcast. If you have any particular topics you would like to hear me talk about, feel free to email me at

I plan for it to be a solo show at first. It’s your feedback that will help set the path to the show. I am even opened to interview anyone, even you! If you’re interested in engaging with my listeners with me, and you would like to be on my podcast, we can do an interview to do a buyer’s persona. I could ask you questions and you can help me with my business to cater to what is best for you. I believe that we all fit into different types of culture and categories, for example, you may be a do it yourselfer and just need some guidance, or you may be someone that prefers an expert, each situation or problem needs to be addressed specifically and your help is important to me and to customers just like you. Or, maybe you would want to ask the business some questions, I could invite a past customer that I have done work for to a show for some small talk and bantering, or invite a close friend or a business friend to the show. Your feedback will help drive the show to whatever direction you’re interested in it to go.

One thing I have only thought to do and never perused was creating content for YouTube. YouTube is the video world, and this podcast being the audio world. The main reason why I didn’t is because, well to be honest, the ignorant people that put hateful comments and bash a person for how they choose to do something. I get that people definitely do things wrong and against code, but even when someone does something right, but because it’s not the way that the viewer would do it, they give the video a thumbs down. I mean, people thumbs down a little kid singing the alphabet. That is a cute video that a little kid wanted to do, and these ignorant people discourage creativity. I guess I got discouraged from posting videos. It wasn’t until I got older, that I learned what “trolling” is. I was raised with compassion and empathy and when YouTube came out, all sorts of people in the world comment with things and I honestly was naïve. I wasn’t a sheltered kid by any means, but I had no idea people actually can be so demeaning, but now I know it is how people are and I can’t let it bother me. Plus, to be honest with you, I tell my customers and my friends to use YouTube at their own risk. Have you ever YouTubed something you’re proficient in and notice that there are videos of people doing what you know, and they are doing it wrong? Ever be like “oh my god, how is this even allowed to be published?” So, I don’t know, how about you let me know? Do you use YouTube, do you swear by it? Do you put up your own videos? HEY, if so, if you post videos on YouTube, would you like to be on my podcast as I would have some questions for you and I’m sure my listeners may have some questions for you in which I can ask. This is hopefully going to be an interactive type of podcast if that’s how you want it to be. And if you prefer to listen on your drive, that’s cool too. I’m hopeful most will find it entertaining.

Getting back to the other platforms, Facebook.com forward slash Preferred Carpentry llc is the one I use the most. On Facebook, I post a lot of videos, live videos, photos of work pictures, and I put up a lot of different content. I am very active there over Instagram. I post more on my personal Instagram than I do on my business Instagram. On Twitter at we prefer you, I started a new account about 2 weeks ago and I post actively there. My friends and family from home give me great feedback regarding my content on Facebook. See, I want to stand out from my competitors and show my customers that not all contractors are out to take advantage of you, and we are real people too. I offer all kinds of options to your project and think of ways to help you save money. I am a long-term thinker and I believe being upfront and honest with my customers during the whole process. I enjoy what I do and I appreciate my customers for referring more business to me. And for those that are not close to my area, I still believe this podcast will benefit you because you can use it to gauge against the contractors in your area. HMM, That could be some good content for the show, you can email me or maybe do an email audio that I can post on the show with your concern slash problem and we can figure it out together, see look at that, finding more flexibility in this podcast for my worldwide and close to home listeners. But I have to say this, I’m not a lawyer, I have no expert degree. I will say, please use practical common sense and I don’t want to be bound by any legality. What you are hearing here is my opinion although I do follow codes and manufacturing recommendations. I don’t mind things being done differently, such as if you really want your crown molding upside down, and I tell you it is not to be installed that way, but you insist, I will do what you ask because it wont fall, that would be preference. But, if you ask me to run a hardwood floor the opposite direction that the manufacturer recommends, I wouldn’t do it. Now, that may not be against your local codes, but if you run it wrong, it has a better chance of cupping, and the joining pieces could separate. I rather in 5 years when that could happen, that you don’t say that Preferred Carpentry installed it, even if we said it won’t be covered under a warranty. So, I don’t want the credibility of the name get tarnished when the business cannot defend itself during coffee small talk. I hope that made sense. What I am telling you is my opinion, and based off of the codes in my area. For example, in Easton, PA, they go by the 2009 IRC and building codes. Right now it’s 2018, that’s nine years later and they still go by those codes. And codes update every 3 years. In New Jersey, they go by different codes. Each area is governed by the codes of that state or town or city. Wouldn’t life be easier if the United States could at least unite on the same code standards, at least in specific areas. Like, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania could all be on the same page, and I get if Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Nevada are on different codes because those groups are different in many aspects, but similar in their own group. SO you need to check what your area calls for. This is to cover you and me as well regarding information.

So, to quick recap this weeks episode, I am looking to bring you content once a week, I don’t have a set day in mind yet, most likely Friday’s I’ll release it, I would like to keep it 10-30 minutes long. I would love your feedback for what you want for content, whether it’s a question of what to look for, what to consider, should you hire someone or do it yourself, should the show have a guest and if so, with who, would you want to be on the show? How about any YouTube stars looking to share some information.  Should it be a friend of mine. Now, I am not famous nor do I know anyone famous, so don’t say “hey I want so and so on here”, I am just a regular guy like you.  Whatever you’re looking to have here, send your thoughts to email me at

If you want to learn how I got started, so how about I give a little insight on that, the business had a different name before it was Preferred Carpentry, I amended the name, I didn’t dissolve the previous name, I just want to be clear with that. So the best way I can think to explain it is, the name used to have more of a mom and pop feel to the name, like just a local name, and as I got better, and more confident on what I can bring to homeowners and business owners via construction skills, I decided that the name Preferred Carpentry has more credibility in it. So basically, as I got better, I felt it was time to change it. So that’s as far as I’ll go into this. If you want to learn more, send me an email.
